Longest Lasting Hollywood Marriages

1. Kirk Douglas/Anne Buydens - 56 years - May 29, 1954
Like everything else about Kirk Douglas, his marriage is incredibly long-lasting. At 93, hes been married to his wife, Anne Buydens, for 56 years. The marriage is Douglass second; his most famous son, Michael Douglas, was born during his fathers first marriage. Douglas and Buydens met in 1953, when she was a publicist for his movie Act of Love. Although Douglas was engaged at the time to actress Pier Angeli, he and Buydens eloped to Las Vegas. In 2004, they renewed their vows before 300 guests, including Nancy Reagan. As part of the traditional Jewish ceremony, Kirk cracked a glass wrapped in linen, an act symbolizing both the joy and difficulty of life. He wasnt strong enough to stomp on it, but in typical fashion he made it work: He used his cane.

2.Alan Alda/Arlene Weiss - 53 years - March 15, 1957
Alda, 74, best known for his role as the sardonic physician Hawkeye Pierce in the legendary television series M*A*S*H*, and his wife, Arlene, 77, have both come a long way from the Bronx. Typically, theyve never made a big deal of it. Alda, whos won five Emmys and six Golden Globes, doesnt make it a habit to talk about his personal life hed rather focus on his liberal Democratic and feminist views. Weiss, even quieter, is an accomplished clarinetist who once played with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. They have three children and seven grandchildren.

3. Martin Sheen/Janet Templeton - 48 years - Dec. 23, 1961
Sheen, 70, best known recently for his portrayal of President Josiah Bartlet on The West Wing, came from a traveling family. One of ten children, he was the first to be born in the United States, and he married a girl from his hometown, Dayton, Ohio. Sheen and the former Janet Templeton, 64, have four children-- actors Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez, Ramon and Reneeand three grandchildren.

4. Julie Andrews/Blake Edwards - 41 years - 1969
The actress and the director met, the way many couples do, at work the1970 movie Darling Lili, in which Andrews played a German spy in World War I. Although the film wasnt a big hit, it began a personal and professional relationship thats grown richer over the years. Andrews, best known for her role as the sprightly Maria in The Sound of Music, starred in several Edwards films that included the gender-bending Victor/Victoria and the satirical S.O.B. Andrews, 74, and Edwards, 88, have five children. As for the secret of their marital success, flexibility seems to be key: Julie once said, All love shifts and changes. I dont know if you can be wholeheartedly in love all the time.

5. Christopher Plummer/Elaine Taylor - 39 years - October 2, 1970
Although hes best known for the role of Captain Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music, the Canadian native, 80, has had a long, distinguished career in theater and the movies. He met Elaine Taylor, an actress, on the set of the farce Lock Up Your Daughters in 1969. In his autobiography In Spite of Myself, Plummer wrote of how empty and despondent he felt at being separated from her. Taylor, now 66, said shed date him if he cut down on the booze. The two were married a year later.

6. Sissy Spacek/Jack Fisk - 36 years - April 12, 1974
Although shes an Academy Award winner (for her portrayal of singer Loretta Lynn in Coal Miners Daughter), Spacek, 60, has never followed the typical Hollywood path. Beginning with an uncredited role in an Andy Warhol movie, she made a name for herself in independent cinema; it was on the set of one of those movies (Badlands) that she met her future husband, art director Jack Fisk, now 64. After she starred in some classic movies (including the terrifying Carrie), Spacek decided to take some time off to focus on her family. She stayed away from the industry for four years. Maybe its that willingness to put her family first thats kept her and Fisk together for nearly four decades. They have two daughters, Schuyler and Madison Fisk, and live on a horse ranch in Virginia.

7. Ron Howard/Cheryl Alley - 35 years - June 7, 1975
Director Ron Howard (Cocoon, Apollo 13, The DaVinci Code) got his start in show business by playing the archetypal small-town American boy, Opie,on The Andy Griffith Show. And offscreen, his life seems just as innocent. Howard, 56, married his high-school sweetheart (who else?) on June 7, 1975, and theyve been together ever since. Asked what he thinks his greatest achievement is, Howard said in 2006, Forty-eight years of steady employment in television and film, while preserving a rich family life. Ron and Cheryl, 56, have four kids: Bryce Dallas, twins Jocelyn Carlyle and Paige Carlyle and son Reed Cross. Howard has said the children were named for the place they were conceived: Bryce in Dallas; the twins in Manhattans Carlyle Hotel; and Reed --well, they just gave him the name Cross because Volvo didnt work.

8. Jeff Bridges/Susan Geston - 33 years - 1977
After Bridges, 60, won an Oscar earlier this year for his portrayal of a broken-down country singer in Crazy Heart, he gave a shout-out to his wife, Susan Geston, and its safe to assume that a fair number of in the audience wouldnt recognize either her or her name. One of the lowest-profile figures in Hollywood, Geston, the daughter of a professional couple from Fargo, North Dakota, was working as a waitress on a ranch when she met Bridges while he was filming Rancho Deluxe. In one of the very few times Bridges has talked about his wife, he said it took just a week for him to fall in love with her. I had a feeling of being at homea soothing feeling of being where I belonged, he said. In marriage, no one can ask for more than that.

9. Meryl Streep/Don Gummer-32 years-September 15, 1978
She seems perfect in every other way, so why shouldnt Meryl Streep have one of the most enduring marriages in the entertainment industry? And Streep, 61, isnt the only talented one in the family. Gummer is a respected sculptor whose work is part of museum collections around the world. They have three children: Mamie and Grace, who are actresses; and Louisa. Streep attributes the longevity of the marriage to a deep understanding between her and Gummer, 63, of whats important in life: "My husband understands the compulsion to create things. With somebody who had a regular job, I think it might have been harder... I think you have to have somebody as a partner who shares what you value."

10. Dustin Hoffman/Lisa Gottsegen - 29 years - Oct.12, 1980
Although Hoffman, 73, has said that marriage seems strange to him, hes done a pretty good job at making it work. Theres something unnatural about marriage, he said in an interview. These two people are not going to be the same people in a few years. Luckily, though, the Academy Award-winning actor and his wife Lisa Gottsegen, have gone through their changes together as they raised their four children: Jacob, Rebecca, Maxwell and Lydia. Besides being an attorney, Gottsegen launched a successful skin-care line in 2007. The trick, Hoffman has said, is to live your own life while sharing your space.

My Significant Other

Growing up was rough taking care of myself and sister I never thought I would find true love. With dad being in and out of jail I wasn't sure I'd find someone I could trust with ALL my heart.

I dated a guy in high school for three and a half years, until he broke my heart. He was everything to me, the only person I thought I could trust and talk to, but he had me fooled! He cheated on me and I had never been so down about something in my life. I had to find other ways to stay busy. I began to go out with friends and socialize. Thats when we "met". We went to high school together and he was one of my ex's good friends, but I didn't know him that well. We had said hello in passing but that was about it. He saw me at a court house paying a ticket and he stopped me. He told me he could help me with the ticker and I gave him my number. He called and we talked about the ticket and he got it "fixed", but he kept calling. We would talk a little but not often. Then one night changed my life forever! We were both at a local football game and i was beginning to crush on him. He said hi and I seen something in his eyes that I had never seen before. We began talking and he asked me to dinner. I was skeptical but I went. He knew everything about my previous relationship and assured me that he wasn't anything like that. He was more than a great guy, that night he became my best friend. We talked every day and hung out. He was out of school and I was about to graduate and go to college. I thought it was the end. We were together everyday and moved in together after I graduated. After one year of living together I recieved a basketball scholarship and had to move away. It devestated both of us. It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. He was all I had. My parents were to busy in the bars and he was my support and my shoulder to cry on. We made it almost two months apart and everythign changed. I went home for the weekend and he proposed. It was perfect! We went to a park and it was barely misting snow. He told me to look up at this sculpture and when I turned around he was down on his knee. I knew it was true and that he was really the one. I finished school in Illinois and moved back to Indiana where we currently live. We both work and I coach basketball so it is hard to find time for each other but somehow we always do. We are currently trying to plan a wedding for summer of 2005 but are doubtful. Last year I got pregnant and lost the baby with all the house bills, college, and hospital bills it is gonna take a while. We want to get married because we are in love, but it would help me in so many other ways and that is why he wants to do it this summer. I can get financial aid for college and I can have insurance if we get married. I currently have neither because of my parents bad decisions. They make too much money for me to get financial aid but they drink it away and can't help us with anything. Nothing will get in our way though! Our love has always over come anything that has tried to step in its way.We both know it will grow more strong every day like it has for the last 3 years! Whether we are married or not the two of us are family and will continue to grow together until death do us part.

A 9/11 Wedding Love Story

We met as pen pals on 9/11, 1992. On 9/11, 2001, our world was traumatized. Our mutual friend who introduced us was trapped in the towers. He made it, and ended up walking me down the aisle - exactly three years later.

Michael is a 27 year old Bostonian and Lisa is a 27 year old gal from a farm in MN. We are both the owners of FiveStarReviews.com, a national magazine. We live with our two kitties, Tachi and Cali, in Las Vegas, NV where we do everything BUT gamble (except for the occasional blackjack). We love to travel, wine and dine and spend lots of time just being together. Michael is originally from Mendon, MA and graduated from Providence College in Rhode Island. Lisa is originally from Mora, MN and graduated from Rollins College in Florida. What do we like to do? Well, be together - lots of traveling, dinners, spa trips, watching 24 and Alias religiously, bowl, jacuzzi time, take tons of pictures and write silly love notes. We are proud of the life we have created with each other - our work, our relationship and our future -and we have worked hard and faced many obstacles to get here. But we have never lost sight of one thing, how much we love each other. We're pathetic, but we love it. We met as pen pals and first loves when we were 13 years old! Our mutual friend, Danny, introduced us and we became lifelong friends. After hearing our friend was trapped in the World Trade Center during the 911 attacks, we started talking again as we were trying to find him. Luckily he was okay, and we ended up moving to CA at the same time. Within a few days of finally living near each other after all those years, we fell in love and the rest is history. Now we dedicate September 12th to a wonderful new beginning for our lives. Our engagement took place in Lisa's dream city, NYC, right in the heart of the theatre district. After seeing Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theatre and going to romantic Rockerfeller Center during the Christmas celebrations, a nervous and adorable Mike popped the question around midnight on bended knee in our 28th story hotel room. Lisa was all the things a girl feels when the happiest moment of her life happens. We will be celebrating our special day at one of our favorite places in beautiful Summerlin. The Siena Bistro, a 2,500 sq. ft. Italian-themed restaurant and bar features a private patio with fireplace and a casual patio that provides beautiful panoramic views of the golf course, Lake Siena and the Las Vegas Strip. Our ceremony will overlook the lakeside Siena Golf Club and music will be provided by the prestigious Silver Strings. The reception (decorated by the fabulous Executive Florals of Las Vegas and Stellar Events will feature a zen Asian garden theme) will start with appetizers, a chocolate fountain and cocktails at the outdoor fireplace patio and follow with a 6 course international dinner, dancing, special musical guest, and of course cake, provided by Master Pastry Chef Mike Amato! Our friend, Chef Daniel Concepcion, is making an exceptionally tailored made meal of our favorite international cuisines.

Tips on Rebuilding Trust within the Marriage

You felt that your life has suddenly become like a movie-complete with the drama and the emotional difficulties accompanying the aftermath of an affair. It seems like an unreal nightmare. When the dust settles, and the two of you decide the marriage is worth saving, steps will need to be taken to rebuild the relationship. Besides committing to doing your best to preserve it, what can you do to make the love between you grow again? Here are some tips that you can follow in rebuilding trust, and ultimately, rebuilding your marriage.

-Resolve to let go of the past. You have gone through the pains of digging through the events of the affair. Assuming that those issues are resolved, you will need to let go of the past in terms of using it to make attacks on your spouse. Emotionally beating them up one more time over something that you have already attacked them about will not take your hurt away.

Attacking them for past choices will not improve the issues that the two of you are facing now. Quit making museum trips, in terms of digging up the past. It is more important for you to resolve to live in the present. Rather, both of you needs to work things out to make things better. If you keep on bringing up the past, you will end up discouraging the efforts of your spouse to work out your marriage and make things better.

-Have fun with each other. Many times the couple has forgotten how to have fun. When two people do not enjoy each others company, it makes it difficult to work together, much less trust each other. With the decision to rebuild the trust, the two of you will need to share enjoyable moments. If every recollection your spouse has is of you being upset and bringing up the past, it will only discourage them. Having fun is important in developing a sense of hope and newness.

-Do some new things with each other. Many times, there is a special openness in relationships when couples do things together for the first time. When both of you do something that neither one of you has done before, then neither one has the edge. With it being a new experience, that neither of you has done before, it creates a ‘primacy experience’. Such first time experiences tend to stick with us.

-Spend spiritual time with each other. In the aftermath of an affair, each of you needs healing. The relationship needs healing. When there is a spiritual oneness, then emotional oneness is easier to accomplish. Try to find common spiritual ground. Pray together, go to a religious site together, read spiritual material together. These things can serve to unite the two of you on a level that was not there before. You need a common goal, and such actions can provide it.

-Value each other’s secrets. Even when you are mad, do not share the secrets your spouse has shared with you. When they realize that you may be upset with them, yet you value their confidences, it provides a place to start rebuilding trust. There has been enough damage done to the trust with the affair. Exposing their secrets will only damage the trust even further.

-Spend time with each other. It is hard to rebuild trust if you do not spend time with each other. Couples need to spend time talking and just being with each other. Often, they isolate themselves from the very people that they need in their lives.

-Make room for your spouse. During the rebuilding, there is often some uncertainty concerning where the relationship stands. It will be important to make your message clear and unambiguous that you want to spend time with them. In the event you want them back, make room for them. Make space in your schedule for them and make space in the home for them as well. No one wants to feel useless or unwanted.

-Forgive and Forget. It is never easy to ask for forgiveness. The guilt and shame can easily blow you away. Pride can also get in the way.
